Really wants to share after watching the program on PBS

According to the PBS presentation “Growing up Online”, many children adapt into the social-networking life. The teenagers stated that they can find their real identity through the world and they can make many friends online more than in reality. However, the parents were worry about all things their children do on the internet. At the same time, the relationships and communications between parents and their children are getting worse. From all the examples showed in the “Growing up Online” videos, we are not only seeing the confidence that the children build from the internet but also the troubles they get from the internet. At the end, Parry Aftab who’s the Executive Directer of WiredSafety.com suggested children to be kind to others, “Stop, Block, and Tell” to the people who threaten them and to use technology responsibly. And Danah Boyd from the Harvard Berkman Center for Internet & Society suggested parents not only restrict their children from going online but also need to teach themselves and their children to live a good quality life.

I learned that children need to be wise on what they are doing. Parents will not be able to protect them from danger if they built a wall between their parents and themselves. It is human nature that parents wish to protect their children from getting hurt but they do not know how to. I just want to share to all of you that getting online is always fun but need to be careful because everything you put online will be exposed to everyone. It is easy to share whatever you want to share but it is hard to remove you have put online. Be responsible and have fun guys :)

  1. I agree with you opinion of social networking causes that parents and teenager's relationship will get worse, that's because they will start keep distance with their parents. It is a big problem in today's society.

  2. I agree that children need to be wise with what they do online. If parents and teachers take the time to teach children how to use the internet in a responsible manner, the lines of communication between kids and their parents and teachers will be open and at the same time they can learn how to be safe online and use the internet in positive ways.

  3. i agree with you completely. social networking has increasingly become more powerful; however, there lurks danger in this "power". facebook, myspace and many other social blogs are very dangerous. picture and personal informations are put up. without ones permission, someone can easily steal ones information. online blogging isnt the safest thing. there are many cases where people were harm because of online blogging. social networking will only become more powerful, but as it continues to grow the danger level will only rise.

  4. I agree with your point of view. Getting online is really fun and you can do lots of stuff. I think one of the most valuable thing for me is I got to contact my long lost primary school friends! And that was so great. However, if children do not take responsibility, it may be harmful though. It takes parents to convince them what is wrong. However, what can the parents do to really break the gap between them and their children? This requires all the parents to go one step further into the real problem.
